Increase Energy Levels Naturally
6 ways to Increase your energy levels
Our energy levels can fluctuate for many reasons, like weather or change in routine and can sometimes be hard to maintain. The good news though is that there are a number of ways we can give our energy a reboot. Stop relying on your daily caffeine fix, here are six tips to try to increase your energy levels naturally.
During high quality sleep your body restores many functions it calls on during everyday life. If you are lacking in sleep not only your energy suffers but also your immune system, concentration and more. It is recommended for good health that we have at least eight hours of sleep each night for our body to be able to restore. By taking steps to increase your sleep satisfaction, you can wake up feeling refreshed and have more consistent energy levels throughout the day. Try a hot bath before bed, this can help relax your body for a deeper sleep. Turn off your tv and put away any electronic devices at least 30min before going to bed to give your brain a chance to shut down and if possible lower the temperature of your bedroom.
You may have heard the saying food is fuel for our body and it really is true. Aim to eat small meals throughout the day, including all three macronutrients, to help maintain energy levels. Eat more complex carbohydrates like brown bread and brown rice, along with good sources of protein, fish and chicken. Good fats are found in foods such as avocados, olive oil and almonds and are a big energy source for the human body.
Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we can use for increasing energy. Physical activity is as simple as walking or yoga for only 20 minutes, and it can do so much more for you then a cup of coffee or energy drink ever could. Also, when you exercise, your body increases production of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, all powerful mood boosters. In addition, exercise will help us sleep better, in turn your body will then have the energy it needs to get you through a busy day.
Exposure to sunlight is known to stimulate your brain to stop producing melatonin, the hormone that helps induce sleepiness. We also absorb Vitamin D from sunshine which our bodies need in order to help keep energy levels at their peak.
Yoga encourages deep breathing which means your body receives fresh oxygen. Fresh oxygen is crucial to increasing your energy levels. By stretching and strengthening the muscles and massaging the internal organs, toxins are cleansed from the body. Take the time to focus on your breathing techniques every day.
Coffee is what most of us are relying on to get us through the day. There are plenty of good things to be said about coffee and it certainly gives us a temporary boost in energy. However, it can also cause anxiety, irritability, muscle tension and in extreme cases insomnia. Try alternative herbal drinks such as green tea or if coffee is reducing your sleep quality but you do not want to give it up completely, try quitting coffee late in the day, such as after 2pm.
